Lily’s Spook Club is a webcomic about two sisters’ paranormal investigations of their hometown of Spirit Hollow, a hotspot of supernatural activity.

06/23/22: Hold-Harmless

Lily and Charley go over the fine-print of their services with a potential client.

As you can see, there was a huge gap between this strip and the last one. I’ve got about six different projects I’m juggling – plus preparing to teach again in the fall – and unfortunately the Spook Club keeps getting put on the back burner. Hopefully it won’t be another eight months until the next one.

10/04/21: The McCollough House - The Final Night

Lily takes one last shot at meeting the elusive ghost of Old Man McCollough.

This is the final edition of the McCollough House Trilogy. I’m going to make three-parters a recurring element of the story, broken up one-offs.

08/15/21: Mr. Huggsencuddles

Lily shoes off an item from her haunted collection.

This one took forever to complete, mainly because I’ve been distracted by some other writing projects.

For this strip, I made a change in the art brush to give the comic a more organic look.

05/22/21: The McCollough House - Night 2

Lily continues to try and make contact with the spirit of Old Man McCollough.

This was my first attempt at really experimenting with lighting effects. I’m happy with how it looks, but I’ll probably keep trying new techniques in future strips.

05/12/21: Know Your Ghost - Poltergeists

Live from the Spook Club Studio, Lily and Charley give a lesson on poltergeists.

This is the first appearance of the “Spook Club Studio,” replacing the white void from an earlier strip.

I almost set this in more of a cable access/blackbox theater setting, with black curtains and black flooring, but with Lily’s dark gray sweatshirt, she came off like a floating head.

04/25/21: Back to the McCollough House

Now with the correct address, Lily’s Spook Club attempts to make contact with the spirit of the elusive Old Man McCollough.

03/24/21: Mildred Dorp

Lily and Charley reveal the results of their latest paranormal investigation to their client, the widower Mrs. Dorp.

In addition to starting to experiment with shading, you might notice another change to the color scheme of Charley’s hat. The black bill and olive green text have been replaced with the more neon green of the Spook Club logo.

03/07/21: Charley's Promise

Lily needs Charley to make her a promise before the next investigation.

With this strip, I wanted to introduce Charley as more of a character. Originally she was going to be a silent, serious sidekick to Lily, but as I started planning more editions, I wanted to make her more of a foil. Now she’s more of an eternal optimist, relentlessly excited for a new adventure, to juxtapose Lily’s more serious and scientific approach to paranormal investigations.

Aesthetically, the most noticeable change to the characters are the bigger, Disney-esque eyes instead of the previous all-black doe eyes. Charley’s color scheme has become brighter, with a pink and purple backpack that really pops against her dark ghost hunting outfit.

01/31/21: The McCollough House

Lily and Charley begin their investigation of The McCollough house, a local legend.

I felt these first designs of the characters were a little too “Peanuts.” They’ll continue to evolve as I work on the series.
